This piece was bought in 1905 by Maharaja Jagatjit Singh of Kapurthala from Mellerio dits Meller, a Paris-based jeweller that had created jewels for the court and aristocracy over many centuries. It is seen in portraits of the Maharaja’s 5th wife Rani Prem Kaur, nee Anita Delgado, whom he met while in Spain for the wedding celebrations of Alfonso XIII when she was just a sixteen-year-old dancer.
