Belt brooch

Cartier Paris, 1922
Platinum, emeralds, sapphires, diamonds
H. 4.2 cm; L. 8.5 cm

This belt brooch is inspired by motifs taken from Persian miniatures and carpets. The Cartier brothers were art and book collectors who lent their personal possessions to their designers, who in turn drew from them many ideas for forms and ornament. Apart from the Eastern influences, the bold combination of colours and the mosaic setting of the stones give this buckle a modern feel.
